The HVAC industry is adopting stricter control over the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of refrigerants.

The Low GWP Refrigerant Transition is Here

The EPA is limiting the GWP of refrigerants and implementing a phasedown of existing, higher GWP refrigerants, including R-410A. The result is a nationwide compromise to use a class of A2L refrigerants with a mildly flammable characteristic, a situation we are addressing head-on. The teams at ClimateMaster and ClimaCool are committed to making this transition happen swiftly and safely for our partners and building occupants.

How this Impacts You.

Is Low GWP product available to order today?

Yes. Low GWP products were added to ClimateMaster selection software in January 2024, and ClimaCool software in June 2024.

These updates now allow you to specify and order select product you need today based on availability and phaseout requirements.

Can we still order Tranquility T Series and R-410A Chiller products during this transition?

Yes. You're not the first one to ask. Throughout the phase-down process, we will keep supplying the R-410A units you know and love, ensuring your short-term needs are met.

Deadlines for Final R-410A Orders are August 29th, 2024!

Will we need sensors?

Sometimes. As you specify products using the new low GWP refrigerant, you'll find that our team has skillfully engineered our products below the threshold that necessitates a sensor.

For projects requiring larger units, we'll incorporate sensors and safety features tailored to mitigate potential risks. Utilize our selection software as a reliable guide.

A brief history

Here's a quick snapshot of some pivotal moments in refrigerant legislation over the years and how they are projected to flow into the near future.

Perspective on the New Refrigerant Options

It's about balance.

In the early 2000s, the industry transitioned from R-22 to R-410A, which came with our first compromise, an increased Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Now, with evolving legislation emphasizing a substantial reduction in global warming potential without ozone depletion, the industry faces more necessary compromises. ClimateMaster's and ClimaCool's shift to R-454B, along with similar choices for the rest of our industry, involves moving to this A2L classified option, indicating mild flammability. At the forefront of our priorities is safety. We engineer our products to utilize the minimal amount of refrigerant necessary to meet your heating and cooling specifications. Additionally, we integrate advanced sensors and technology to effectively mitigate any associated risks as needed.

KEY ADVANTAGES

OF THE CLIMATEMASTER TRANQUILITY LOW GWP SERIES

  • Environmental Responsibility: Low GWP R-454B refrigerant helps reduce your environmental impact, aligning with the commitment ClimateMaster has to sustainable, eco-friendly design practices.
  • Improved Efficiency: Transitioning to more eco-friendly refrigerants typically leads to a decrease in efficiency, capacity, or both. With ClimateMaster R-454B products, we have achieved efficiency increases of up to 11% EER while only experiencing an average difference of less than 3% in cooling/heating capacity at AHRI/ASHRAE/ISO 13256-1 water loop conditions.
  • Reliability and Longevity: Engineered for precision and durability, ClimateMaster heat pumps provide reliable performance, minimal maintenance requirements and enhanced product lifespan.
  • Smart Controls Integration: The iGate® 2 system offers advanced control capabilities that enable users to remotely access, monitor and identify potential issues, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
